Honestly, I don’t even care about The Great Gatsby all that much. I just make a point of remarking on notable works entering the US public domain in order to draw attention to the fact that the US public domain is actually moving again, after spending twenty years effectively frozen thanks to Disney’s fuckery.

I bet the reason they didn’t lobby for it again is that they were starting to run out of fairy tales to adapt into movies.

As I understand it, it’s more that a. the US Congress’ present state of legislative paralysis makes it extremely unlikely that Disney would be able to ram through any major copyright reforms before Steamboat Willie hits the public domain in 2024, so they’re not going to waste their lobbying money trying; and b. their lawyers have come to the conclusion that individual Mickey Mouse cartoons entering the US public domain is of minimal concern, because they could still use trademark litigation to prevent third parties from sticking Mickey’s face and name on unauthorised products.
