I think it’s vital that we don’t continue to lean on the narrative that Trump thinks he won the election as it implies mental instability or other impairment, and that’s simply untrue.
Trump knows he lost. He has known that he lost for months.
In spite of this, he is actively choosing to carry on with this deeply disingenuous and dangerous narrative out of a perverse desire to protect himself from prosecution beginning 20 January 2021 at the hands of both state and federal government officials. He is actively and knowingly choosing to destabilise American democracy and has a cadre of followers and hangers-on in government who are equally craven and willing to carry water for him, thus perpetuating this narrative. That he and those vying to fill his place when he vacates office later this month are pushing this and continuously throwing gasoline on the fire behind-the-scenes can and will lead to further domestic division and insurrection.
This is how authoritarians and fascists assume control. We are fortunate only in that this time there are a select few hardliners who have privately alerted Trump and his administration not to do anything stupid and that the military has no interest in aiding or abetting this treason. Next time, we may not be so fortunate, which makes it all the more necessary that we call this out for what it is in the strongest terms possible: Donald Trump is knowingly attempting to subvert our Constitution as a would-be tyrant. He isn’t a loon or an idiot, he is and always has been a fascist.
