actually i think that tumblr’s general stance on slur reclamation + usage regarding marginalized sexualities is starting to get extremely childish and counterproductive without an ounce of nuance….just. extremely logged in.
first of all lgbt related slurs are by no means comparable to say, racist or ableist slurs, especially not on an intracommunity basis. secondly, if you tell someone they can’t reclaim a slur but are unable to articulate or give a reason as to why they cannot reclaim it, you need to evaluate why you’re just parroting shit you heard other people say without critically thinking about it. thirdly, the existence of commonly known specific slurs for a group is not a measure of their overall oppression.
we also need to learn that slurs should not just be reduced to cool words that you get the opportunity to say regardless of if you can reclaim them or not. the purpose of slur reclamation is group empowerment and as a means to take away the slur’s weight. calling someone a slur that you can reclaim, even as a joke, is not acceptable unless you know that they are ok with it.
at the same time, saying an LGBT slur out loud isn’t like, a magical hex that automatically makes you a homophobic or shitty person. I hate to word it this way, but context really does matter in these situations. For example, I am very close with an older gay man who was and still is very active in our local community’s fight for LGBT rights and very much earned his stripes. He jokingly and light-heartedly calls me the d slur and I’m perfectly fine with this. I know if I asked him to stop, he absolutely would, no questions asked. I have been told that he’s a shitty terrible lesbophobic person for this when that is obviously not the case.
Aside from not liking the fact that people are telling me how to feel as well as disregarding and disrespecting someone who continues to advocate for his community and provide LGBT youth the resources they need, the nuance of the situation is so vastly different from some cishet white dude on the street yelling the d slur at me as he drives by that I resent the implication that it’s comparable at all.
This might cause me to lose followers but I’m genuinely just thinking out loud. The attitude people take toward stuff like this is making less and less sense to me as time goes on.
I was tired last night and I forgot to add that LGB-related slurs are also a different breed from transmisogynistic slurs.
I am TME so I can’t personally speak on it, but what I do know is that TME LGB people need to listen to TMA people about anything regarding that. I mindlessly said “LGBT slurs” when what I meant to convey was “slurs related to sexuality.” I want to make this addition while this post still has only a few notes.
