I kind of feel like we’re not really ready to have the “satire requires clarity of purpose” discussion because most of the stuff that popular media calls “satire” is really just uncritically replicating the exact thing it claims to be criticising and slapping a laugh track on it.

@oh-man-what-the-heck replied:

is… is that not what people are criticizing when they say “satire needs clarity of purpose”?

@scrumpyfan43 replied:

Yeah that’s precisely what it’s criticising! Iirc it was specifically a reaction to South Park

See, that’s exactly what the criticism is misaimed. The problem with South Park style “satire” is not that it lacks “clarity of purpose”. It’s 100% clear on its purpose. That purpose just happens to be self-serving bullshit – it’s punching down while disingenuously pretending to be punching up in order to deflect any criticism.

Basically, when you scold that kind of faux-satire for lacking clarity of purpose, you’re giving it the benefit of the doubt that it’s doing it unwittingly, and the vast majority of it simply does not warrant that benefit of the doubt.
